The HITECH Act of 2009 has created an unprecedented opportunity for healthcare providers to implement Health care IT by proving $19.2 billion in funding for hospitals and eligible providers that adopt a certified Electronic Health Record system (EHR). The incentives for demonstrating Meaningful Use of this technology are significant - up to $10 million per hospital, and $64,000 per eligible provider. The disadvantages of failing to comply are equally significant. Providers who do not demonstrate meaningful use of technology by 2015 are not eligible for the incentive payments and will be penalized through a 1% reduction in Medicare reimbursements each year up to 5% total reduction.
